Iran: Head Of The Judiciary, Ayatollah Larijani Warns Rohani

For Ayatollah Larijani, President Hassan Rohani is not qualified to decide on the lifting of the house arrest of Mir Hossein Moussavi and Mehdi Karroubi.

Ten days after the brilliant victory of President Hassan Rohani, re-elected President of the Islamic Republic of Iran with 57% of the votes in the first round, the head of the judiciary issued a scathing warning, stating that he Was not qualified to speak of an end of house arrest for opposition leaders Mir Hossein Moussavi and Mehdi Karroubi.

The head of the Iranian judicial authority attacked President Rohani without naming him, criticizing his remarks to end the house arrest of Mir Hossein Moussavi and Mehdi Karroubi. "Who are you to want to end the house arrest," said Ayatollah Larijani.

The two opposition leaders have been under house arrest since February 2011. They challenged in 2009 the re-election of former ultra-conservative president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, leading a protest movement finally suppressed by the government.

At election rallies, supporters of Hassan Rohani demanded, by slogans, the release of the two men. Hassan Rohani himself said that if he obtained a strong majority, he would act in this direction.

The outgoing president was re-elected with 57% of the votes in the first round of the presidential election on 19 May, against just under 51% in 2013. It is, therefore, a clear warning from the chief justice controlled by the conservatives Just ten days after the presidential election.
