In South Africa, since Friday, May 26, the executive committee of the party of Jacob Zuma, the ANC, meets in closed all weekend. An ordinary meeting, except that this is the first since the controversial ministerial reshuffle of the head of state last March. And since then, the anti-Zuma sling has intensified. And some senior officials of the party intend to ask him to leave his post.
Officially, the fate of Jacob Zuma is not the agenda of this meeting. But the anti-Zuma intend to be heard and ask him to resign for the good of the ANC. Never has the protest been so strong. This meeting is the first since a cabinet reshuffle that caused a real crisis.
Since then, three of the six party leaders have openly criticized the head of state. The trade union confederation, the Cosatu and the Communist Party, both historical allies of the party, demanded his resignation. Like the veterans of the ANC, a group of personalities respected the anti-apartheid struggle.
And yet President Jacob Zuma will certainly survive this weekend.
His supporters - who represent roughly half of the 104 members of this executive committee - are determined to fight to keep him at the head of the party. The executive committee does not have the powers to recall the president, they argue. To do this would require a Congress.
In any case, the timing is important: many ANC deputies would like the problem Jacob Zuma to be settled internally so as not to have to vote with the opposition to a forthcoming motion of no confidence in Parliament.
