They had been on hunger strike since 17 April. On Friday evening, 26 May, Palestinian prisoners imprisoned in Israel put an end to their movement, as an agreement was reached - although no details were provided on its contents.
Friday evening, after long negotiations - they would have lasted more than 20 hours - the agreement was concluded. The Israeli prison services have finally agreed to deal with Marwan Barghouti, the Fatah leader who launched the strike.
Between 1,000 and 1,500 Palestinian prisoners refused to eat for 40 days to denounce their conditions of detention. With very concrete demands such as access to a public telephone, extended access rights, and the cessation of solitary confinement.
It is impossible at this stage to know more about the terms of the agreement, nor why the Hebrew state has finally given way. Israel had shown itself inflexible since the beginning of this collective movement, while the state of health of the prisoners had deteriorated greatly in recent days.
The president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, had asked for an American mediation two days ago, via the emissary of Washington in the Middle East.
