Burma: A Military Plane Crashes With 116 People On Board

In Burma, a military plane disappeared from radar screens on Wednesday, June 7, with 116 people on board. Debris from the aircraft was found at sea. The hope of finding survivors is slim.

The Chinese-built military aircraft carried 116 people: 106 soldiers and their families and 14 crew members. The call was abruptly interrupted at approximately 13:35 local time, while the aircraft was flying over the Dawei area in southeastern Burma on the seashore.

He had earlier taken off from the southern town of Myeik, where the soldiers and their families were based, and headed for the economic capital of Rangoon. Debris from the plane has already been found at sea, 218 kilometers from Dawei. An airport official said he was leaning for the technical incident because the weather was good. He said he had little hope.

Transportation accidents are frequent in Burma, including plane crashes and murderous shipwrecks. Many people live by the sea and move by boat. Last April, at least 30 people died in the collision of a passenger boat and a freighter. The last major airplane accident occurred in August 1998, with the crash of a Myanmar Airways aircraft carrying 39 people.
