Morocco: Silence Of The Government Despite The Growing Protest In The Rif

Morocco is living to the rhythm of the protest movement of the Rif where three days of the general strike have been decreed this Thursday, June 1st. Demonstrations of support were also organized in several large cities before being dispersed by the police. But the silence of the government and Prime Minister Saad Eddine el Othmani annoys the protesters.

Since the beginning of this new crisis in the Rif, the Prime Minister has not spoken publicly. Its silence has caused the reaction of civil society associations, political parties, and even parliament.

Finally, Saad Eddine el Othmani spoke about the situation in the Council of Ministers on Thursday. A video of a few seconds was disseminated, on which the head of the government appears inciting its ministers to get involved in the realization of the projects launched in 2013 in the Rif region and which have not come to an end.

"The people of Al Hoceima are our sons," he said, recognizing the protesters' right to demonstrate while indicating the need to guarantee the stability of the country. Without mentioning the dialogue with the protestors of the Rif.

Dialogue

At the same time, the majority coalition of the government issued a communiqué signed by its six parties, including the PJD. The document welcomes the choice of dialogue between local authorities.

Activists criticize the banality of the remarks of the Prime Minister and demand for the people of the Rif of work and consideration. They announced a three-day general strike that begins this Friday. They demanded the release of their prisoners and insisted they did not want to back down.
