Turkey Wants To Weigh in Crisis Between Qatar And The Gulf Monarchies

In the diplomatic crisis between Qatar and the Gulf monarchies, Turkey intends to play an important role. Ankara and Doha have forged a strong relationship over the past few years under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. And the Turkish Parliament voted Wednesday 7 June for the deployment of Turkish troops in the emirate. A measure for the moment symbolic, but which indicates to what extent Ankara intends to weigh with all its weight in the conflict.

First of all, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan deplored the "  isolation  " and "  sanctions  " against Qatar, and then Parliament took over, authorized by an express measure the deployment of troops Turkish territory in the territory of Qatar.

Relations between Ankara and Doha are considered strategic by the Turkish government, Recep Tayyip Erdogan has already made several trips there and signed several economic and military agreements. The possible deployment of Turkish troops is authorized by virtue of an agreement already signed between the two countries three years ago.

In this crisis Ankara obviously tries to play the negotiators: on the one hand, the Turkish president is clearly in favor of Doha. On the other hand, Turkish diplomacy has been trying for 48 hours to bridge the Gulf monarchies with the emirate.

One way for Turkey to show that it may play a role in the Middle East. At the very moment when the country is sidelined from the great battle of Raqqa in Syria, against the Islamic state organization.

It is also in this context that the head of the Iranian diplomacy Javad Zarif met this Wednesday the Turkish president on this file, as well as on the Syrian question.
