In Kashmir, tension escalated a notch on Saturday (May 27th) with the death of the region's independence leader who allegedly pledged allegiance to the Al-Qaida and Islamic groups. A curfew was introduced in Srinagar, the capital of the Indian province. A region that has experienced a return of violence for more than a year.
An anti-terrorist operation carried out Saturday by the Indian army resulted in the death of the leader of the insurrection in Kashmir. Sabzar Ahmad Bhat was the successor of Wani, who was also killed by the Indian armed forces last July in the Kashmir Valley. Becoming a legend among his followers, claiming the death of more than 100 people, he was then buried as a martyr.
Officials of the Indian army stationed in the region say they also killed six suspected terrorists on Saturday (May 27th) during the operation. Terrorists who, according to their statements, came from Pakistan.
For more than a year, the tensions between the radical militants and the Indian army have been very strong in the region. Access to the Internet and social networks is regularly cut and curfews are almost permanent.
More than 700,000 Indian troops are being mobilized in Kashmir, making it the most militarized area in the world.
