Seventeen-year-old Santos Colon, from New Jersey, tried to recruit a sniper to assassinate the pope and detonate explosive devices during the Mass, which was presided over by the supreme leader in Philadelphia on Sept. 27, 2015, said the ministry.

But the sniper the boy tried to use was actually an undercover agent from the FBI.

Colon was arrested 12 days before the scheduled date for the planned attacks.

The boy pleaded guilty to providing material support for a "terrorist" organization.

In his confession, Kolon said he tried to carry out the attacks to support the organization of the Islamic state, noting that he used Ahmed Shakur's name.

The ministry did not explain how the boy related to the jihadi organization and how he communicated with him.
